The Archconfraternity of St. Joseph of Rabat presents the programme of the solemn and devotional feast in honour of the Glorious Patriarch, Patron of the Universal Church St. Joseph, for the year 2013.
On the special occurrence of the 50th Anniversary: the Coronation of the statue of St. Joseph 1963 – 2013
Held at the National Sanctuary of St. Joseph, adjoining the St. Mary of Jesus Franciscan Church in Rabat.
13th – 19th March 2013
Wednesday 13th March: Opening of the liturgical feast
At 6.00 p.m. Holy Mass is celebrated by the Rev. Father Guardian Paul Galea O.F.M., Spiritual Director of the Archconfraternity of St. Joseph, with a special sermon by Rev Can. Father Karm Attard. There will also be the chanting of the antiphon and the Eucharistic Celebration. This takes place in the presence of the statue-bearers who undergo the ritual of being given the responsibility of carrying the statue. The official announcement of the celebrations takes place and then the statue is taken out solemnly from the oratory and placed in the Church of St. Mary of Jesus.
At 8.00 p.m. Reception for the bandsmen and members of the L’Isle Adam Band Club, held at the Reception Hall of Palazzo Xara.
At 8.00 a.m. and at 12.00 p.m. Aerial fireworks are let off. There will also be a consecutive display of aerial fireworks while the statue of St. Joseph is placed in the Church of St. Mary of Jesus, including flares and crackers.
Thursday 14th March: Day of Remembrance in Honour of Mgr. Ġużeppi De Piro in his devotion towards St. Joseph
At 3.30 p.m. The exposure of the Holy Eucharist and the adoration of Corpus Domini.
At 6.00 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Father Adrian J. Cachia O.F.M., with a sermon by Rev. Father Tony Sciberras M.S.S.P., with the participation of members of the Missionary Society of St Paul. At the begining of the Mass there will be the presentation and inauguration of the statue of God’s humble servant Mgr. Ġużeppi De Piro founder of the Missionary Society. This new statue is part of the external set of statues which adorn St. Paul’s street during St. Joseph’s feast. The service music is sung by Coro Bel Canto under the direction of Mro. Hermann Farrugia Frantz.
At 8.00 p.m. A reception for the religious and social societies of Rabat and for the contibutors who help with the annual book of the feast “Leħen il-Komunità Ġużeppina” at the L’Isle Adam Band Club at the Reception Hall of Palazzo Xara.
Friday 15th March: First day of prepartion ‘Triduum’
At 5.30 p.m. Chanting of the Vespers.
At 6.00 p.m. A Holy Mass with a special sermon dedicated to St. Joseph celebrated by Rev. Mgr. Pawl Vella, Liturgical Hymn dedicated to St. Joseph, chanting of the Hymn of St. Joseph, Antiphone and Eucharistic Celebration.
At 8.30 p.m. The Annual General Musical Concert of Anthems and Marches from the L’Isle Adam Band Club at the Reception Hall of Palazzo Xara. This year the Musical Society L’Isle Adam is presenting a new set of Marches.
At 8.00 p.m. and at 12.00 p.m. Aerial fireworks are let off.
There will also be a consecutive display of aerial fireworks at the end of the liturgical celebration held at the Church.
Saturday 16th March: Second day of prepartion ‘Triduum’
At 5.30 p.m. Chanting of the Vespers.
At 6.00 p.m. A Holy Mass with a special sermon dedicated to St. Joseph celebrated by Rev. Mgr. Pawl Vella, Liturgical Hymn dedicated to St. Joseph, chanting of the Hymn of St. Joseph, Antiphone and Eucharistic Celebration.
At 8.15 p.m. A march through the streets of Rabat by the Philarmonic Society ‘Sliema’ Band Club which will start from St. Paul’s Street just under the wooden triumphal arch which adorns this street. This March continues through the following streets Indri Borg, Old Doni, Doni, L’Isle Adam, St. Joseph till we reach the premises of the L’Isle Adam Band Club.
At 8.00 p.m. and at 12.00 p.m. Aerial fireworks are let off.
There will also be a consecutive display of aerial fireworks at the end of the liturgical celebration held at the Church.
Sunday 17th March: Third day of prepartion ‘Triduum’
Last day of the ‘Triduum’
At 8.15 a.m. Holy Mass celebrated by Rev. Can. Father Louis Suban, Archpriest of the Parish of Rabat for the Religious and Social Societies of the locality of Rabat.
At 9.30 a.m. There will be a children’s parade from near the Augustinian Convent to the Franciscan Church of St. Mary of Jesus. Children are asked to bring with them flowers to be presented to St. Joseph and other gifts to be given to children in need. The parade will be accompanied by the L’Isle Adam Band Club that will play hymns and marches dedicated to St. Joseph.
At 10.15 a.m. A Holy Mass with sermon is held for children, celebrated by Rev. Father Joe Caruana O.F.M., with the participation of the Choir Santa Klara (St. Claire). Then there will be a presentation of babies to St. Joseph at the National Sanctuary adjoining the church of St. Mary of Jesus. Just after Mass there will be a social activity held for the children at the Reception Hall of the L’Isle Adam Band Club at Palazzo Xara. This reception is organised by the Youths Section (Sezzjoni Żgħażagħ) of the l’Isle Adam Band Club.
At 5.15 p.m. Chanting of the Vespers.
At 5.45 p.m. A warm welcome to His Excellency Mgr. Charles J. Scicluna. Auxiliary Bishop and General Vicar of the Archdiocese of Malta.
At 6.00 p.m. Holy Mass co-celebrated by His Excellency Mgr. Charles J. Scicluna, with special sermon of the Triduum dedicated to St. Joseph by Mgr. Pawl Vella, the Liturgical Hymn dedicated to St. Joseph, chanting of the Hymn St. Joseph, Antiphone and Eucharistic Celebration. After Mass His Excellency will visit the National Sanctuary of the Crowned St. Joseph and also the L’Isle Adam Band Club of Palazzo Xara.
At 8.30 p.m. A band march by our local Musical Society L’Isle Adam Band A.D. 1860 starts from St. Paul’s Street, just under the wooden triumphal arch. This March continues through the following streets Lion’s Well, Mill, Old Doni, Flats Area, Doni, St. Bartholomew, Zondadari, St Augustin, L’Isle Adam Square, St. Joseph and we end in St. Paul Street in front of the premises of the L’Isle Adam Band Club.
At 8.00 a.m. and at 12.00 p.m. Aerial fireworks are let off. There will also be a consecutive display of aerial fireworks at the end of the Liturgical Celebrations that take place in the church of St. Mary of Jesus, including flares and crackers.
Monday 18th March: Eve of the solemn and devotional feast of St. Joseph
At 8.15 a.m. Holy Mass with chanting of the Te Deum. There will
also be a display of consecutive aerial fireworks.
At 12.00 p.m. Aerial fireworks are let off.
At 5.00 p.m. Holy Mass with Homily.
At 6.00 p.m. Devotional transfer of the reliquary urn of St. Joseph from the National Sanctuary of St. Joseph to the church of St. Mary of Jesus with the participation of the Franciscan Friars and the members of the Archconfraternity of St. Joseph. Just afterward there will be the chanting of the Vespers directed by the Provincial Minister of the Franciscan order Rev. Father Sandro Overend O.F.M., Eucharistic Celebration directed by His Excellency Mgr. Father Sandro Overend O.F.M., Provincial Minister.
During the transfer of reliquary urn there will also be a display of consecutive aerial fireworks.
At 7.45 p.m. Holy Mass with Homily.
At 7.45 p.m. A march through the streets of Rabat by the L’Isle Adam Band Club. This march starts from the Church of St. Mark of the Augustinians and passes through the following streets St. Augustin, Piazza L’Isle Adam, St. Joseph, St. Paul till we reach the Museum Esplanade near the Domus Romana.
At 10.00 p.m. Aerial colourful flares and crackers are let off. There will also be a consecutive display of aerial colourful fireworks.
At 11.30 p.m. A display of land fireworks will take place at The Domus Romana Museum Esplanade.
Tuesday 19th March: Day of the solemn and devotional feast of St. Joseph
At 6.00 a.m. Holy Mass with Homily.
At 7.00 a.m. Holy Mass celebrated by the Provincial Minister of the Franciscan order Rev. Father Sandro Overend O.F.M. during this Mass there will be the chanting of the Praise of Dawn.
At 8.00 a.m. Holy Mass with Homily at the National Sanctuary of St. Joseph.
At 8.30 a.m. The processional arrival of the Rev. Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter at the Church of St. Mary of Jesus. This will be welcomed by marches and hymns played by the L’Isle Adam Philarmonic Band of Rabat that will be stationed near Palazzo Xara. During the procession aerial flares and crackers are let off.
At 9.15 a.m. The Rev. Metropolitan Cathedral Chapter will celebrate Holy Mass at the Church.
At 10.00 a.m. Holy Mass with Homily held in the National Sanctuary of St. Joseph. During the Sanctus of this devotional Mass and at noon there will be the let off of aerial flares and crackers.
At 1.00 p.m. the traditional march through the old streets of Rabat in the suburbs of the old city of Mdina, where popular marches and hymns are played by the L’Isle Adam Band. This March will start from St. Paul’s Street, just under the wooden triumphal arch and will pass through the following streets: Il-Patrijiet, Lion’s Well, St. Martin, Indri Borg, St Paul, Museum Esplenade, Doni, St. Bartholomew, Zondadari, St Augustin, L’Isle Adam Square, St. Joseph where the march will come to its final climax with a mass celebration of the traditional singing of hymns and anthems.
At 6.00 p.m. the solemn chanting of the Vespers, conducted by Rev. Provinċjal Patri Sandro Overend O.F.M.
At 6.00 p.m. the King’s Own Band Club of Valletta will start a band march near the Church of St. Mary of Jesus. This band passes through the following streets: L’Isle Adam Square, St. Augustin, Republic, Main Street, St. Paul and in the end this band settles on the raised stand to perform a Musical Programme in front of the Convent of the Franciscan Friars next to the church of St. Mary of Jesus. As soon as the procession reaches the church the King’s Own Band Club of Valletta will perform the hymn of St. Joseph and other anthems.
At 6.30 p.m. The De Rohan Band club of Żebbuġ strats a march from in front the Monument of St. Joseph at Museum Esplenade and continues through St. Paul Street, St. Joseph Street and L’Ilse Adam Square where it welcomes the procession by playing the popular hymn of St. Joseph. Then it accompanies the ceremonial procession through the streets of Rabat. During this procession the De Rohan Band performs marches and hymns dedicated to St. Joseph until the procession reaches the church of St. Mary of Jesus.
At 7.00 p.m. The solemn Procession of St. Joseph is led by the Provincial Minister of the Franciscan Friars Rev. Father Sandro Overend O.F.M., accompanied by the Franciscan Friars and by the members of the Archconfraternity of St. Joseph.
While the statue is carried shoulder high out of the church there will be the firing of the salute and also a consecutive display of aerial fireworks. During the procession various colourful flares and crackers are shot high in the sky. Other displays of fireworks take place when the procession reaches Saqqajja Hill Square and as soon as the Statue passes under the triumphal arch. Here a consecutive display of colourful aerial fireworks is let off.
At 10.00 p.m. The ceremonial statue of St. Joseph arrives at the church of St. Mary of Jesus. The chanting of the popular Hymn St. Joseph and of the Antiphone is performed. Then the exposure of the Holy Eucharist and the adoration of Corpus Domini takes place. As part of the closure the worshippers gathered are blessed.
• On the 19th March during the 1.00 p.m. March, when the L’Isle Adam Band reaches the Domus Romana Museum Esplanade, a bouquet of flowers is placed in front of the monument of St. Joseph at the centre of the promenade. This is done in the name of the Rabat citizens devotees of St. Joseph that make part of this Community of St. Joseph. During this particular moment the band plays the popular hymn St. Joseph composed by Mro Carlo Diacono.
• On the day of the feast in the evening, exactly when the procession reaches the Augustinian church of St. Marc, we urge everyone to participate in saying the prayer to St. Joseph and as to all pray as a whole congregation for his blessing.
• On the feast’s eve and during the feast, the music of Mro Carlo Diacono, will be under the direction of Rev. Mgr. Mro Dun Ġwann Galea. On the other days of the feast, the music will be under the direction of Mro Joseph Galea, the Band Conductor of the L’Isle Adam Philharmonic Band of Rabat. During these days of the feast the music in the church of St. Mary of Jesus is performed by some bandsmen of the L’Isle Adam Band Club together with the choir of ‘St. Francis of Assisi’ of the same church accompanied by organists Mro Carmen Deguara and Mr. David Camilleri.
